2012 Terra Barossa Shiraz Cabernet Petit Verdot

Comments

The wine has a dark red hue with a spicy plum character which is complexed by an iodine like character. Plum and black currant fruit characters are balanced by spicy, chocolates and oak characters. The wine has soft tannins which provide structure to the wine. The wine finishes with a creamy character and lingers for a long time.

Vinification Notes

The fruit was harvested at night when the fruit was deemed to be ripe by our winemakers. Warm fermentation was carried out in a mix of potter and open fermenter. Extended time on skins adds to the texture of the wine. The wine was matured in French oak for ten months prior to blending and bottling.

Blend

Shiraz - 70%, Cabernet Sauvignon - 20%, Petit Verdot - 10%

Vintage Notes

A warmer spring and cooler summer saw the Barossa begin vintage 2012 with some exceptionally healthy vines and expectations for early maturation. Maximum mean temperatures in the Barossa in spring (September to November) were slightly above average, which led to good vegetative growth, healthy vines and potentially early maturation, while summer mean maximum temperatures were cooler than average.

STEPHEN TANZER'S INTERNATIONAL WINE CELLAR SCORES 2014

90 Points: ‘Inky ruby. Exotically perfumed aromas of dark fruit preserves, incense and woodsmoke are sharpened by a peppery nuance. Fleshy and supple on the palate, with good depth to its sweet blackberry and cherry flavours. Silky tannins build slowly and add shape to the long, fruit-driven finish. This wine is quite complex for the money.’

ROBERT PARKER - THE WINE ADVOCATE, NOVEMBER 2014

89 Points: ‘This is one of my go-to wineries for top values from the Barossa Valley in Australia. The Thorn family has been growing grapes since the 1870’s, and the quality of these wines are impressive. Moreover, the prices are almost ridiculously low, making these wines frequent entries in The Wine Advocate. The 2012 Terra Barossa Proprietary Red, a blend of 69% Shiraz, 21% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Petit Verdot aged 12 months in a combination of French and American oak, is a wine that over-delivers . Its deep purple colour is followed by notes of blueberries, licorice, camphor, chocolate and a background hint of espresso. This is a big, chewy, rich, fruit-bomb with enough oak to provide additional character. Enjoy it over the next 3-4 years.’
