2012 Terra Barossa Importers Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon

Comments

On release the wine has a lifted blackcurrant and tomato leaf aroma; hints of cedar and spice add to the complexity of the aroma. The wine has primarily dark berry fruit characters on the palate. French oak spice adds to the complexity of the wine. The palate has fine structured tannins which balance the fruit and oak weight well. The wine has a clean finish and lingering flavour.

Vinification Notes

The fruit was harvested at night when the fruit was deemed to be ripe by our winemakers. Warm fermentation was carried out in a mix of potter and open fermenter. Extended time on skins adds to the texture of the wine. The wine was matured in French oak for ten months prior to blending and bottling.

Vintage Notes

A warmer spring and cooler summer saw the Barossa begin vintage 2012 with some exceptionally healthy vines and expectations for early maturation. Maximum mean temperatures in the Barossa in spring (September to November) were slightly above average, which led to good vegetative growth, healthy vines and potentially early maturation, while summer mean maximum temperatures were cooler than average.

STEPHEN TANZER'S INTERNATIONAL WINE CELLAR SCORES 2014

90 Points: ‘Inky ruby. Redcurrant and cherry aromas are complicated by suggestions of fruitcake, anise and vanilla. Juicy and focused on the palate, with zesty red fruit and floral pastille flavours taking a turn to deeper cherry with air. A firm spine of acidity adds lift and cut to the persistent, subtly sweet finish, which shows just a hint of tannins.’

ROBERT PARKER - THE WINE ADVOCATE, NOVEMBER 2014

90 Points: ‘This is one of my go-to wineries for top values from the Barossa Valley in Australia. The Thorn family has been growing grapes since the 1870’s, and the quality of these wines are impressive. Moreover, the prices are almost ridiculously low, making these wines frequent entries in The Wine Advocate. The 2012 Terra Barossa Importer’s Reserve reveals fabulous richness for a wine in this price range along with a full-bodied mouthfeel, and lots of blackberry and crème de cassis fruit intertwined with hints of charcoal, burning embers and vanilla from its oak aging. A note of roasted coffee beans and a sweet, creamy mouthfeel make for a lush, opulent, impressive wine that over –delivers in quality, flavour, intensity and character. It tastes like something costing twice as much. Drink now-2020.’
