2014 Sandpiper Pinot Gris
The wine has the distinctive varietal pale bronze colour. The wine has lifted nashi pear primary fruit characters with a hint of raw fennel. The palate follows the lead of the aroma with pear and citrus fruit flavours. The palate has clean and soft acid with a refreshing finish.
Harvest was carried out at night. The fruit was pressed (using an airbag press). After settling the juice was warmed and inoculated with a neutral yeast selected for its ability to respect the purity of the fruit.
Post fermentation the wine was stabilized, minimally fined, filtered then bottled.
Spring rainfall was well below average with several days reaching 30°C. The growing season had even temperatures and little rainfall. Ripening was slow and steady leading to the development of good floral characters and the fruit retaining its natural acidity.
GARY WALSH, WINEFRONT SEPTEMBER 2014
90 Points: ‘Pear with a little sweet spice loaded in. Medium bodied, a fresher brighter style of Pinot Gris, though does have some weight. Acidity is even and well measured, light chalky texture and a finish that has a little pithiness – like munching on the skin of a hard green pear. Some musky perfume in there too. Good.’
