2020 Sandpiper Mataro Rose
Pale Salmon in colour with delicate pink hues. The nose is brimming with perfumed wild strawberries, white peach and a subtle marjoram lift. The palate follows on with characters of cranberries and raspberries that are supported by a gentle spice and crisp acidity.
Harvest of the Mataro occured in late Feburary when the grapes were at optimal ripeness for the style. The fruit was destemmed but not crushed and was left on its skins for 3 hours to obtain the pale salmon colour. This delicate pink juice was then fermented in a stainless steel tank for 20 days at low temperatures to maintain fruit purity. After fermenting the juice to dryness the wine was clarified and then bottled immediately.
Much like the previous vintage, the 2020 harvest has produced wines of immense quality but with very low quantities. Another dry winter and mild weather during the ripening period lead to great varietal flavours and excellent tannin structure. Upon harvest the bunches were few and far between and the berries themselves small. This led to fruit with intense flavour and colour along with great power and balance.
