2012 Morello Nebbiolo

Comments

Mid red/brick hue. Lifted complex nose with morello cherries, freshly turned earth and dried herbs. The palate has strong long tannins, dusty oak characters and a noticeable acid back bone. The back palate of the wine is silky and the wine is vibrant allowing this wine to be consumed now or cellared for years to come.

Vinification Notes

Grapes picked at optimum ripeness from our St Kitts Vineyard, in a few different batches. The grapes are then crushed, de-stemmed and fermented in small open fermenters using natural yeast. Some parcels are left on skins for up to three weeks, other parcels are pressed when dryness is reached.

Maturation

Matured in old oak barrels for 16 months. The wine is then racked out of the barrel and the wine is bottled unfiltered.

Vintage Notes

A warmer spring and cooler summer saw the Barossa begin vintage 2012 with some exceptionally healthy vines and expectations for early maturation. Maximum mean temperatures in the Barossa in spring (September to November) were slightly above average, which led to good vegetative growth, healthy vines and potentially early maturation, while summer mean maximum temperatures were cooler than average.

THE KEY REVIEW OF WINE, TONY KEYS, SEPTEMBER 2014

94 Points‘Light delicate fragrant nose soft and gentle across the palate and the most wonderful finish with perfume lingering, great value at $20.’

BOB CAMPBELL, NEW ZEALAND, 2015

91 Points

ALAN HUNTER, COURIER MAIL, JULY 2014

89 Points: Nebbiolo generally excels in moderate climates with long ripening seasons, so this example from Barossa’s warm climate surprises. An early pick resulting in 11.5% alcohol content is hardly stereotypical, but it offers fresh, fragrant cherry and cranberry fruits with understated tannins.’

CANVAS MAGAZINE, JOHN HAWKESBY, JULY 2014

‘From grapes grown in the southern Barossa ranges where the long ripening periods and crisp cool nights are well suited to this much-loved Italian varietal. Very herby with distinctive displays of violets, cherries and plums and enough acidity to drink now or cellar for years. Perfect with pasta and great buying.’
