2019 Mount Crawford Riesling
Our 2019 Sandpiper Riesling boasts a pale straw colour with striking green hues. Notes of fresh lemon and lime are apparent on the nose backed up by subtle hints of florals and spice. Lively notes of citrus and minerality flow generously across the palate leading to a long balanced finish.
Harvest was carried out at night. The fruit was pressed (using an airbag press) within an hour of harvest. Care was taken not to lose the delicate Riesling aromas and flavour precursors in the juice. After settling, the juice was warmed and inoculated with a neutral yeast selected for its ability to respect the purity of Riesling.
Post fermentation the wine was stabilised, minimally fined, filtered then bottled.
The 2019 vintage in the Barossa can be summed up with two key points; low yields and high quality.Winter in 2018 was extremely dry and with high winds, frost and rain at flowering the Thorn-Clarke vineyards had a lot to contend with. As a result the vines had a very small amount of bunches and small amount of berries per bunch. Low yield though lead to concentration of varietal characters in the bunches and the berries produced this year were intense in fragrance & flavour. Best of all they have an amazing balance. Truly 2019 will sit alongside the greatest vintages the Barossa has seen this century.
