2014 William Randell Cabernet Sauvignon

Comments

Rich, deep red in colour.  Blueberry, blackcurrant and violets initially with spice and hints of cedar below.  Well structured with integrated tannins and oak matched with generous blackberry flavours on the palate.

Vinification Notes

The fruit was harvested at night. Fermentation was carried out in a variety of small capacity fermenters. After pressing the parcels were filled to French oak for maturation. The wine was racked after six months and the parcels were blended to form the final wine.

Maturation

The wine was matured in a temperature controlled barrel hall for 16 months in French hogsheads (barrels).

Vintage Notes

Spring rainfall was well below average and temperatures above average with several days reaching 30°C. The growing season had even temperatures and little rainfall. Ripening was slow and steady leading to the development of good tannin structure and fruit characters.

92 Points - Josh Reynolds, Vineous

(aged in new and used large French oak barrels) Inky ruby. Expressive, oak-accented dark berry, licorice and pipe tobacco aromas are complemented by vanilla and rose pastille qualities. Intense black currant and bitter cherry flavors show impressive depth and a smooth, supple personality. Clings with strong tenacity on the youthfully tannic finish, which leaves behind peppery spice and dark chocolate notes.

95 PointsJames Halliday Wine Companion 2016

Night-harvested from the Milton Park Vineyard, fermented in small batches, matured for 16 months in French hogsheads. A wholly convincing Eden Valley cabernet, purity and intensity the two pillars around which the wine is built. Cabernet is seldom as supple and immediately enjoyable as this wine, cassis flowing evenly across and along the palate, fine tannins and cedary French oak providing the final touches.

94 Points / Silver Ribbon – Bob Campbell 2016 NZ

Dense, lean and linear cabernet sauvignon, with taut blackcurrant, cassis, graphite, fresh herb and spicy oak flavours. It's a bit of a sleeper with exciting development potential.’

93 PointsWine Business Monthly, August 2016

The William Randell wines are turbocharged but find a sleek carriage of their potent fruit and oak flavours. This has lashings of dark berries, plum, choc-mocha, malt and minty herbs. It’s a thick set but held tight, saturating the pallet and lashing the senses.

95 Points - James Halliday, Wine Companion 2018

A wholly convincing Eden Valley cabernet, purity and intensity the two pillars around which the wine is built. Cabernet is seldom as supple and immediately enjoyable as this, cassis flowing evenly across and along the palate, fine tannins and cedary French oak providing the final touches.

The Wine Front

94 Points – Eden Valley Cabernet Sauvignon from an excellent vintage. Deep, dark fruit crashes over firm, ropey tannin. To say that this will live and mature over a long period is an understatement. Mint, cassis, clovey oak, undergrowth. A substantial wine with a substantial future.

18.5/20 - Dark, deep, near saturated black-red colour with a touch of garnet on the edge. The nose is very firm and tightly bound with concentrated aromas of blackberry fruit harmoniously entwined with layers of menthol and cedar, revealing nuances of eucalypt, black olives and cassis. The aromatics build in intensity with aeration. Full-bodied, the palate features a firm and tightly concentrated heart with layers of rich and lusciously sweet, blackcurrant fruit with cassis, blackberries, menthol. mint and cedar. The palate is well-constructed with plenty of fine-grained tannin extraction forming a firm and dense core, with integrated acidity lending tension and drive, and enhancing the fruit sweetness. The structure carries the flavours to a long, lingering finish. This is a finely concentrated, firm, but fine-grained Cabernet Sauvignon with sweet blackcurrant fruit and layers of cassis, menthol, mint and cedar. Serve with lamb and beef, and with hard cheeses over the next 7-10 years. Fruit from ‘Milton’ Park, Eden Valley, fermented to 14.5% alc., the wine aged 16 months in French oak hogsheads.
