2013 Mount Crawford Chardonnay
The wine is a light straw colour. The nose displays some complexity with citrus and stone fruits complimented by nutty barrel characters. This is a medium weight wine with peach and citrus characters balanced nicely with good acidity. The wine finishes with clean lemon like acidity.
Crushed, de-stemmed and then pressed using a membrane press. A parcel of the juice was filled to French oak barrels for fermentation, the balance was fermented in stain-less steel. The tank fermentation was slow and cool to retain all the natural flavours of the grape. The wine in tank had several weeks of lees contact post fermentation. The wine was the blended, minimally fined and then filtered.
Spring rainfall was also well below average with several days reaching 30°C. The growing season had even temperatures and little rainfall.
Ripening was slow and steady leading to the development of good floral characters and the fruit retaining its natural acidity.
Harvest occurred in the first week of March 2013.

90 Points: ‘Something of a surprise packet, with some depth to its varietal fruit expression, while retaining focus and brightness; white peach, nectarine and melon flavours are given support by a light touch of French oak.’
THE WEST AUSTRALIAN, THURSDAY 28TH OF NOVEMBER
89 Points: 'Like the riesling in this range which is sourced from Eden Valley. It is only lightly influenced by oak but in the main it is all peachy and melon with a trace of citrus tang. Crunchy fruit on the finish, an eminently appealing and drinkable wine.'
ROBERT PARKER - THE WINE ADVOCATE, NOVEMBER 2014
88 Points: ‘This is one of my go-to wineries for top values from the Barossa Valley in Australia. The Thorn family has been growing grapes since the 1870’s, and the quality of these wines are impressive. Moreover, the prices are almost ridiculously low, making these wines frequent entries in The Wine Advocate. The 2013 Chardonnay Mt. Crawford exhibits more peach and tropical fruit characteristics as well as a more opulent style. It offers good, fresh, zesty acids and assorted citrus notes in its elegant, medium-bodied personality. Consume it over the next year.’
