2012 Sandpiper Riesling

The nose is bright and lifted with lime juice, perfumed floral notes and honeysuckle characters. The palate is crisp, clean with vibrant, zingy lemon zest flavours combined with a hint of lime leaf. There is a lovely crisp and clean mouthfeel, balanced with citrus fruits and natural acidity.

Vinification Notes

Crushed, de-stemmed and then pressed using a membrane press. Pressings were not used and ferment commenced using French yeast at 12-15 degrees celcius. The ferment was kept slow and cool to retain all the natural flavours and aromatic qualities. The wine was racked, filtered and then bottled soon afterwards so the wine was a true expression of the grape/terroir from which it was made.

Vintage Notes

The 2012 vintage was preceded by a cool summer and above agerage rainfall during the winter months. Excellent picking conditions for the Mount Crawford white wines produced fine and delicate flavours typical of the Eden Valley. The mild conditions ensured the reds could be harvested during the night and early mornings without heat compromising quality.

Several warmer weeks in January and February ensured the red developed excellent colour and fruit character whilst maintaining good acid structure and overall balance. Vintage 2012 was a 'light' year with yields of both reds and whites 20-30% below what would normally be expected.

Most of the quality rieslings from classic regions are now nudging above the $20 mark, which makes this wine from a very good Eden Valley producer something of a bargain. This is from a particularly good vintage and made by rising star Helen McCarthy, formerly of Taylors in the Clare Valley. The bouquet is both floral and spicy, the palate fresh and clean with characteristic citrus notes and plenty of fresh, cleansing acidity. A great drink for a warm summer afternoon.
