2012 Sandpiper Pinot Gris

The colour is mid straw. The nose shows lifted fruits with notes of pear and blossom. The palate is medium bodied with Nashi pears and apple puree. There is a lovely richness and viscosity which can be attributed to the time on yeast. The wine finishes clean and crisp with great length of fruit.

Vinification Notes

The fruit was harvested at night when the winemakers felt the flavours were right. The juice was gently extracted from the fruit to minimise colour pick up (the fruit is a dark pink/grey colour). Cool fermentation was carried out in stainless steel to retain fruit characters. Extended time on lees add to the texture of the wine.

Vintage Notes

The 2012 vintage was preceded by a cool summer and above average rainfall during the winter months. Excellent picking conditions for the Mount Crawford white wines produced fine and delicate flavours typical of the Eden Valley. The mild conditions ensured the reds could be harvested during the night and early morning without heat compromising quality.

Several warmer weeks in January and February ensured the reds developed excellent colour and fruit character whilst maintaining good acid structure and overall balance. Vintage 2012 was a ‘light’ year with yields of both reds and whites 20-30% below what would normally be expected.

"A pale pink colour offers a seductive start, before exuding a more exotic fragrance than most PGs-more towards spiced strawberry. It's crisper than you'd expect out of the gris side of the varietal naming conventions, with a tang of lemon and lime juice, as well as its lingering red apple taste in the finish."

The Grape Hunter, Winsor Dobbin, August 2012

"New Thorn-Clarke winemaker Helen McCarthy, a rising talent poached from Taylor’s, is showing a deft touch even with entry level wines such as this. Midway in style between the complexity of pinot gris and the freshness of pinot grigio, this is a quite delightful drink for the price, full flavoured with citrus and poached pear notes but at the same time very crisp and clean. Excellent drinkability and value."
