2023 Vintage Forecast

The beginning of February each year is a time of much anticipation and excitement throughout the Barossa. Grape growers, vineyard workers and viticulturists are starting to see the results of months of hard work, and wineries are starting the magical process of turning grapes into precious wine.

This year, we are running 3 to 4 weeks behind a ‘normal’ year. So, for now, there is a lot of waiting and preparation for the big harvest period ahead of us. The vineyard team are being kept busy maintaining the health of all our vines whilst the winery crew keep busy cleaning and preparing the winery for things to come.

Mother nature is the reason for this late start, with La Nina weather conditions giving us a cooler and wetter growing season. The extra moisture is great for healthy thriving vines, but with the lower temperatures, it also means that the vines flowered much later than normal (and a later harvest).

A season like this will mean vibrantly perfumed and fresh flavoured grapes, with vines avoiding the real heat of summer. Whites will be very aromatic with lots of fresh cut fruit and citrus, and lovely natural acidity. Reds should show baking spice and black pepper, along with the normal dense berry and plum flavours.

Something to look forward to for sure.

Time will tell how 2023 stacks up in the end, but as it stands, things look very promising indeed!
